A subject rarely translated onto the small screen, the four-part series follows the tale of Esther ‘Esty’ Shapiro, played by rising star Shira Haas, a young woman who flees her ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn to chase a new future in Berlin.

Inspired by a 2012 memoir of the same title by Deborah Feldman, the coming-of-age tale mirrors the author’s own experience of escaping her husband and community without telling anyone.

Suffocated by the religious rulebook with women obliged to shave their heads and wear wigs, a ban on reading and television not approved of by their husbands and a dress code to adhere to, Etsy – just like Feldman – runs away with nothing but a passport and wad of cash in her pocket.

With no education or training, the 19-year-old newlywed struggles to find her feet in the strange German capital.

But with the help of new friends, Etsy soon settles into secular life and celebrates a series of firsts: buying a pair of jeans, dancing in a club and falling in love.

Speaking about leaving the Hasidic community, Feldman wrote in The Guardian: “I drove away from my marriage, and my religion, for good on the one eve of my 23rd birthday, with nothing but my son and some garbage bags filled with clothes.”

“I changed my phone number and address and didn’t tell anyone where I was. To the people whose blood is the same as mine I am very likely lost for ever.”

Directed by Maria Schrader, the Netflix series is a rare look into the ultra-Orthodox community with members of the Jewish community working both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
