The series, which follows the story of bookstore manager Joe and his infatuating obsession with writer Beck, deals with everything from online stalker culture (acceptable?) to real life murder (definitely not acceptable) and everything in between. Starring Gossip Girl’s Dan Humphrey – aka Penn Badgley – and Pretty Little Liars’ Shay Mitchell, the series has us hooked.
And the good news is that it’s coming back for another season. So, what do we know so far? Warning, spoilers ahead.
The ‘You’ season two trailer has landed
We’ve finally been given a glimpse of what to expect in season two and Joe has swapped the Big Apple for Los Angeles.
“You know, love has taken me to pretty dark places,” he narrates in the opening scene. “But Los Angeles has got to be as dark as it gets.”
Introducing viewers to his new life, Joe mercilessly mocks the city’s inhabitants for creating faux online personas – only to reveal that he has reinvented himself.
When asked to give a name for his coffee order, he simply replies: “I’m Will.”
Anyone else already got the shivers?
The female lead has been announced
Victoria Pedretti has been announced as the female lead for Season 2 of You opposite Penn Badgley. Victoria will be playing the role of Love Quinn, the female protagonist who will fall for Joe Goldberg. According to TVLine, Love “is an aspiring chef who’s working as a produce manager in a high-end grocery store. Unlike her predecessor, she is uninterested in the world of social media, branding and self-promotion, focused instead on leading an interesting life. She is also tending to deep grief—and when she meets Joe, she senses a shared knowledge of profound, life-changing loss.”
A new character Will has been announced
Played by Robin Lord Taylor, Will “deals with unsavoury sorts as part of his job, but is himself a thoughtful, personable, and highly intelligent guy who marches to the beat of his own drummer”, Deadline wrote.
It’ll be set in Los Angeles
For those who have already read the book on which the series is based, you’ll already know this. Following season one’s New York setting, Joe heads west for a LA change. In a recent interview, Elizabeth Lail (who plays Beck) confirmed it’ll be completely different, and the storyline will be moving on from Beck — for the most part. “I think they’re shooting it in LA, and so nothing will be the same. Hardly anything. It’ll be a whole other story,” she told Radio Times.
It won’t follow the book
Apart from being set in Los Angeles, not all of the book’s plot will be followed. “We’ve got lots of great stuff from the books, and also some new things that have come about as a result of changing the story for TV, like that (spoiler alert) Candace is alive and kicking and not pleased with Joe,” the show’s writer, Sera Gamble said of Hidden Bodies, the sequel book written by Caroline Kepnes.
We’ll get to explore Joe’s past
Gamble also revealed we’ll get to learn more about Joe’s past, including why and how he came to be like this. “There’s a lot more to explore about Joe from earlier in his life. Those are the things we’re starting to get into for season two,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
Beck probably won’t be back
As we know from the end of season one, Beck and Peach probably won’t return — as they are dead — but if Candace is anything to go by, we might get to see some flashbacks.
When will season two air?
Netflix has officially announced the new season will drop on December 26.
