The reason why? According to the BBC, Mexico is facing a shortage of agave, the main ingredient of tequila.

In 2011, only 17.7 million blue agaves were planted in Mexico, far short of the almost 42 million needed to sustain current industry demands. mans.

To cope with the high demand, plants are reportedly being pulled up before they have fully matured. These younger plants sadly produce less tequila.

“They are using four-year-old plants because there aren’t any others. I can guarantee it because I have sold them,” Marco Polo Magdaleno, a grower in Guanajuato told the New York Post.

Its likely the shortage continues until 2021 when improved planting strategies come into effect.
