On Thursday morning Prince George arrived for his very first day of school.
It’s well known that royal titles come with a strict, and sometimes bizarre, set of rules. You can’t choose your family. But in George’s case, you can choose your surname.
At school, the little royal will be known simply as George Cambridge.
“There won’t be any special treatment,” Ben Thomas, former headmaster of Thomas’s Battersea, told People reporters.
“In fact, what his parents would like for him, as any parent would like for their child, is they have a wonderful, fulfilling and private childhood.”
It must be a relief for the teacher who won’t have to call His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge during attendance.
Historically, Kings and princes adopted surnames from their father’s titles. Although Mountbatten-Windsor is the official surname for the Queen’s descendants, Prince William and Prince Harry both used the last name Wales in school and the military.
Kate Middleton was unable to see her eldest off for his first day because she’s suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum, the same severe morning sickness that affected her previous pregnancies.
However, George Cambridge seemed to be in high spirits as he met the Head of Lower School, Helen Haslem.
Fingers crossed there’s not more than one George in the class!
