Lady Gaga’s Multi-Layered Met Gala Outfit

At the Met Gala in May 2019, Lady Gaga – who co-chaired the event – had more than a few magical moments on the red carpet. She started out in a billowing hot pink gown with a giant bow on her head and an umbrella-carrying tuxedo-clad entourage to help her with her epic train. She then stripped down to reveal a black ball gown before showing off a slinky bright pink slip dress and what appeared to be a retro mobile phone but was actually a Judith Leiber bag. She wore oversized black Linda Farrow sunglasses to add to the drama. Her final costume change was a crystal-studded black bra with matching underwear. All items were by Brandon Maxwell.

Cardi B’s Clam Shell Gown

On the Grammys red carpet in February, Cardi B was the pearl at the centre of a clam-inspired vintage gown from Mugler’s Fall 1995 Couture show archives. Opting to wear the dress exactly how it was originally worn down the runway, Cardi B wore a sequined bodysuit with a nude overlay and a blush satin sheath skirt that hugged her curves and fanned out into a mermaid silhouette at the hem. She accessorised with long pink satin gloves, stacked pearls around her neck and a bouffant bun wrapped in more strands of pearls.

Kim Kardashian’s Wet-Look Met Gala Look

Kim literally looked dripping wet when she walked the Met Gala red carpet in a beige Thierry Mugler dress. Inspired by Sophia Loren in Boy On A Dolphin wearing a wet see-through dress on a ship, Kim’s latex dress was created specially for her. Besides the wet illusion, the other standout was how insanely tiny Kim’s waist looked, all thanks to a corset.

Katie Holmes’ Cashmere Bra

This was quite possibly the moment that secured Katie Holmes her title as one of the most influential fashion icons of 2019. While out and about in New York in August, Katie was spotted hailing a cab wearing a taupe cashmere sweater with a matching bra poking out underneath. Within hours, the Khaite cardigan and cashmere bra set sold out online.

Kaia Gerber’s Retro Throwback To Her Mum

2019 was the year for recreating iconic fashion moments. For her 18th birthday, Kaia stepped out in a bondage-inspired Versace look that resembled the MTV Video Music Awards outfit worn by her mum, Cindy Crawford, back in 1992.

Billy Porter’s Tuxedo Ball Gown

When Billy Porter steps onto a red carpet, it’s always a theatrical spectacle. But his Oscars gown was next-level. The custom tuxedo ballgown hybrid by Christian Siriano featured a sharply tailored tuxedo jacket with silk lapels, white-ruffled sleeves, a bow tie and voluminous velvet ball skirt. “My goal is to be a walking piece of political art every time I show up. To challenge expectations. What is masculinity? What does that mean? Women show up every day in pants, but the minute a man wears a dress, the seas part,” Billy told Vogue. “I’ve always wanted to wear a ball gown, I just didn’t know when.”

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Slow Walk In Vintage Valentino

Trust Gwyneth to turn a casual walk into a viral meme. When she walked onto the Emmys stage in September to present an award, Gwyneth’s fitted Valentino gown caused her to shuffle her way across the stage. The resulting strut became an entire mood and the Internet was quick to turn the Goop moment into a meme.

Kim Kardashian’s Black Bondage Dress

Kim Kardashian West was all about Thierry Mugler in 2019. In her most risqué fashion moment of the year, she attended the Hollywood Beauty Awards in February wearing a bondage-inspired vintage 1998 Thierry Mugler dress. The dress went viral and caused controversy when fast-fashion boutique Fashion Nova knocked off the design days later. Kim took to Twitter to express her disappointment, saying, “It’s devastating to see these fashion companies rip off designs that have taken the blood, sweat and tears of true designers who have put their all into their own original ideas.” Before her tweet, there was speculation that she was in on the retailer copying it.

Jennifer Lopez’s Vintage Versace Dress

Hands-down THE top viral fashion moment of 2019 was when JLo walked down the Versace Spring 2020 runway at Milan Fashion Week in a reimagined version of the iconic jungle print dress she wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards. 20 years later and it’s quite possible Jennifer Lopez looks even better now at 50 than she did back then!
