The Secret Nod To Time’s Up You Probably Missed At The Golden Globes

Look a little closer…

They might not have been wearing black, but your favourite celebrities still managed to make their stance clear on female empowerment this Golden Globes, opting for an oh-so subtle nod to Time’s Up you probably missed at first glance.

A number of Hollywood’s most eminent celebrities, including Emma Stone, Anne Hathaway and Claire Foy chose to wear Time’s Up ribbons attached to their wrists and bags — a small gesture that represented big, big things.

The ribbons, which were provided to red carpet goers by stylist Arianne Phillips — the same woman who designed the Time’s Up pins we saw a lot of in 2018 — were created to raise awareness of the Time’s Up x2 movement, aimed at doubling the number of women in leadership positions. The ribbons feature the well-known Time’s Up logo with an additional ‘x2’ spin on the right hand side.

Debuting the campaign on the red carpet at the Golden Globes was only fitting, considering the 2018 awards formally kicked off the initial Time’s Up movement, with red carpet goers ditching their usually colourful outfits for an all-black dress code instead. The mass protest kicked off a year of firm feminism within the entertainment industry, with celebrities including Emma Watson and Meryl Streep taking activists as their guests, sparking a conversation around gender equality across the world.

Awash in black, the 2018 carpet was the first of many fashion-led protests for the movement, all of which stemmed from the famous #MeToo wave which took over the internet in 2017, following news of high-profile director Harvey Weinstein’s many sexual harassment and assault claims. From the Oscars to the Grammys, there was no shortage of red carpet moments for celebrities to make their activist mark — and it seems 2019 will be no different.

For Monday’s ceremony, celebrities pinned, tied and draped their ribbons to accessorise their outfits, with everyone from nominees to up-and-coming actresses taking part. Some, like Foy, tied hers around her wrist (a nice touch to go with her buttercup Miu Miu gown) while others, like Olivia Colman, opted to attach hers on the front of her clutch — and certainly wasn’t to be missed.
