Chontelle McGoldrick applied for a flight hostess job to both Qantas and Emirates airlines earlier this year, however both rejected her because of the coin-sized anchor tattoo on her ankle.

Chontelle, who is twenty-one years old, told news.com.au that this was the first time sheโ€™d had an issue with getting a job from having a tattoo.

โ€œThey said some cultures and religions find them offensive, so I was told to come back when itโ€™s completely gone and there canโ€™t be any scarring or marks.

โ€œIโ€™ve worked in an orthodontistโ€™s office and a health food store and at both of those places [having a tattoo] didnโ€™t really matter.

โ€œBut the airlines said getting it removed would make it easier for me to get the job in the future, because Iโ€™m already on their records.โ€

Currently, there is no law in Australia that prevents companies from discriminating against people with tattoos. However, under the Fair Work Act, it is illegal to discriminate based on race, religion, gender, sexuality, age, physical or mental disability, marital status, family or carerโ€™s responsibilities, pregnancy, political opinion, national extraction or social origin.

According to a study conducted by McCrindle Research, Australians are getting tattoos more than ever, with one in five people having one or more tattoos now.

Chontelle is considering removing the tattoo now so that she doesnโ€™t have any issues in the future.
