Maisie Williams, Lena Headey and Liam Cunningham, from the Game of Thrones cast, visited International Rescue Committee programs in Greece this week.
Approximately 57,000 refugees are stranded in Greece at the moment, and the cast members visited to meet with people, talk to them about their experiences and share the stories they heard, in an attempt to get the EU leaders to do more for refugees.
Lena Headey was particularly struck by the sadness of the people she met with: “They’re stuck. And they’re unbelievably sad. Understandably. We can do better for them. We must do better for them.”
Maisie Williams was frustrated by the potential of the children there: “For me it is about the children…children with so much potential, so many hopes and dreams. Where is the humanity that makes it acceptable for them to languish in refugee camps – in Europe?”
Liam Cunningham spoke about the fact that it’s something we’ve done to each other: “This is not an earthquake, this is not a tidal wave. This is a man-made crisis. 57,000 stranded in Greece. Refugee camps in Europe? Is this truly the standard EU leaders want to set as the way to respond to the global refugee crisis?”
