The Crown Is Set To Be *Very* Different In Season 2

It won't focus on Queen Elizabeth

While details surrounding season 2 of The Crown have been kept under lock and key, creator Peter Morgan has revealed which character the story will centre around โ€“ and itโ€™s not Queen Elizabeth.

So who will it be you ask?

Well none other than the Queenโ€™s husband, Prince Phillip.

โ€œHeโ€™s [Prince Philip] a strong flavor,โ€ said Morgan of Princeโ€™s character portrayed by Matt Smith at the Royal Television Societyโ€™s The CrownDeconstructing the Coronation in London.

โ€œI find him extraordinarily interestingโ€”his childhood, again, you couldnโ€™t make it up. The soul of season two is about his complexity.โ€

Unfortunately Morgan remained tight-lipped on what areas of the Princeโ€™s colourful personal life the show will cover, including his infamous (and rumoured) extramarital dalliances.

โ€œThis is a spoiler-free chat! Weโ€™re still in the cutting room and making all sorts of changesโ€ฆโ€

What we do know is that the new season will pick up exactly where it left off, covering 1956 through 1964.

โ€œIt takes Claire Foy (Queen Elizabeth) and Matt Smith to the outer edge of where we can take them, with their ages, if we took it any further we would have to think about recasting,โ€ he continued. โ€œThere is no commitment of it going further at the moment, weโ€™re just focusing on this season up until 1964.โ€

As for a third season, we already know Foy says she wont be back after season 2, but Morgan says theyโ€™re waiting to see how the new season goes.

โ€œWeโ€™re pretty swamped at the moment. Iโ€™ve started thinking about a third season โ€“ you have to be responsible, you canโ€™t say youโ€™ll do it and then suddenly go, โ€˜actually I found out itโ€™s really dullโ€™.

โ€œI have done some preparatory work, Iโ€™d be happy to do it, but at the moment Iโ€™m swamped.โ€
