Taylor Swift Makes History At The 2019 American Music Awards

The pop star has now beaten Michael Jackson’s record

After what has been a complicated and frustrating year for our girl Taylor Swift, she finally proved to all the hater’s out there why she’s one of the most celebrated artists in music history. The 2019 American Music Awards were always going to be a special occasion for Swift and her fans, known as Swifties. The ‘ME’ singer was set to receive the Artist of the Decade award in front of her peers, but it was her nomination wins throughout the night that has crowned Swift as the most accomplished American Music Award’s artist of all time.

The late Michael Jackson had previously held the record, with 24 wins, but Taylor has now surpassed him with 26 after taking home Favourite Album – Pop/Rock for Lover and Artist of the Year. The accomplishment came just one year after Swift made history for having the most AMA wins of a female artist, surpassing the one and only Whitney Houston for that honour.

“The last year of my life has had some of the most amazing times and also some of the hardest things I’ve gone through in my life and not a lot of them are things that haven’t been public. And I wanted to thank you so much for being the thing that has been a constant in my life. Like, this industry is really weird,” Taylor shared with the audience.

“You feel like your stock is either up or down and people either like you or they don’t or you’re feeling bad about yourself. But the people that hang in there for you are the ones that you will never forget.”

Throughout her career, the country-turned-pop star has earned 35 AMA nominations and received an impressive five victories during her first show in 2008. At this year’s award show, Swift blessed us with the ultimate mash-up medley performance of old and new songs, including “Love Story,” “I Knew You Were Trouble” and the first live performance of “The Man,” from her latest album Lover.

Legendary and influential songwriter Carole King, summarised Swift’s success and talent perfectly as she introduced the artist and presented her with the award.

“She is one of the only modern pop artists whose name appears as the sole songwriter in her song credits. The past decade has been incredible for this artist, and the best is yet to come.”

With the announcement of Swift’s three 2020 Grammy nominations just last week, we wholeheartedly agree with King that this is Taylor Swift’s world and we’re just living in it.
