Ever felt so ridiculously tired that you snap at your significant other/BFF/work colleague/pet?
Turns out, you’re not alone. And, there’s a term for it.
If you’re feeling angry as a result of sleep deprivation, you’re probably ‘slangry’.
We’ve all felt ‘hangry’ (only food will fix that problem), and now there’s another term we’ll be adding immediately to our daily conversations.
As Bustle reports, feeling ‘slangry’ can be the result of a one-off sleepless night, or from ongoing sleep problems like insomnia.
Beyond the catchy title, sleep deprivation is a wide-spread concern in Australia. As The Sydney Morning Herald reports, a study from a Nourished Life found 65 per cent of respondents suffered from sleep deprivation or disturbed sleep (add this writer to those statistics).
The Australian Sleep Foundation advises that a lack of sleep can impact your mood, memory, concentration and quality of life. Most of their recommendations for a good night’s sleep are no-brainers, and yet we still ignore them. So here’s a reminder:
– Have a regular sleep pattern
– Get the right amount of sleep (most adults need about 8 hours)
– Switch off those devices and wind down before going to bed
– Sleeping during the day can make it more difficult to fall asleep at night, so avoid daytime naps when possible
– Alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes can keep you awake
– If you’re still having trouble sleeping, you may professional help
Sweet dreams!
