Sarah Jessica Parker is about to return to TV in quite a different role to her famous Carrie Bradshaw from Sex And The City. She plays Frances, a woman going through a mid-life crisis in HBOโs new series, Divorce.
She spoke to People magazine about what sheโs learnt about divorce through playing the character.
โ[Divorce] is rife with all sorts of people that relish it and enjoy it,โ she said. โThereโs things about it that friends enjoy because it allows them to voice feelings and share thoughts about spouses that they were harboring. I think it can bring out some selfish qualities in people.โ

Though SJP could not personally relate to the divorce itself that her character was going through, given that she has been married to Matthew Broderick for 19 years, she felt it was an important story to tell about marriage.
โItโs not so much Iโve been in her position, but I understand somebody who wants to find fulfilment, they need to rescue themselves and their lives,โ she said. โAlso being a mother whoโs concerned with making the right choices for her own children and handling something thatโs potentially so painful, how does one โ how do you talk about it in a way thatโs not patronizing but is careful. That mattered a lot to me in how we talked about it.โ

She was also asked about how she portrayed this character differently to Carrie Bradshaw, to which she replied that it wasnโt about making others feel sympathy for her.
โI didnโt care about people responding well to choices Frances made,โ she said. โI think marriages are complicated and smart people make choices that are not necessarily smart.โ
