Sarah Jessica Parker has spoken about her “surprisingly not weird” catch up with her ex boyfriend Robert Downey Jr, 25 years after they broke up in 1991.
The pair dated for seven years, but hadn’t spoken or seen each other since the breakup in the early 90s. But earlier this year SJP and her ex reunited in New York, after Downey Jr organised a catch up.
“I want to check in with someone I shared a big part of my life with and say ‘Hi’,” Downey Jr told radio host Howard Stern in 2015.
“Seeing her I was like, she’s so great and so cool and so funny and in command, and I got to meet her kids and I saw the way that she and [her husband] Matthew [Broderick] lived, and I respect both of them so much.”
SJP felt similarly warm and fuzzy about the reunion, telling Stern this week that “it was surprisingly not weird.”
“We were 18 when we met and fundamentally we are sort of the same. I think the difference is he has a family and a wife and obviously his career is a massive thing, but I think his true nature – it was completely familiar.”
“I always felt very affectionate towards him,” she said.
“I thought it ended well in the way we broke up. I never didn’t care about his well being … I never felt resentment.”
The pair met in 1984 when they were teenagers and dated for seven years before parting ways in 1991.
Looking back on the breakdown of the relationship, Downey Jr chalked it down to his drug and alcohol problems at the time.
“I was so selfish,” he has said, to Parade magazine in 2008. “I liked to drink, and I had a drug problem, and that didn’t jibe with Sarah Jessica, because it’s the furthest thing rom what she is. She provided me with a home and understanding. She tried to help me. She was so miffed when I didn’t get my act together.”
