Princess Diana’s brother has spoken out about his sister’s funeral, claiming royal officials lied to him about the wishes of Princes William and Harry.
Earl Spencer told BBC Radio 4 that he objected to the young princes walking behind their mother’s coffin.
“Eventually I was lied to and told they wanted to do it, which of course they didn’t but I didn’t realise that,” Earl Spencer said, The Guardian reports.
He continued: “We would walk 100 yards and hear people sobbing and then walk round a corner and somebody wailing and shouting out messages of love to Diana or William and Harry, and it was a very, very tricky time.”
Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997. At the time, William and Harry were 15 and 12 respectively.

Speaking to Newsweek magazine last month, Harry recounted his heartbreak about the very public procession.
“My mother had just died and I had to walk a long way behind her coffin surrounded by thousands of people watching me while millions more did on television,” he said.
“I don’t think any child should be asked to do that under any circumstances. I don’t think it would happen today.”
