The royal bride-to-be is likely to pay homage to her mother

Ever since news broke of Princess Beatrice and property tycoon Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi’s engagement, speculation over everything from the wedding location to the designer behind the dress has reigned the headlines. According to royal protocol, tiaras are traditionally reserved for married women as they are a not-so-subtle sign of marital status.

“For married ladies it was a sign of status and would show you were taken and not looking for a husband. For the gentleman it was a clear sign not to make advances toward the lady in question,” etiquette expert Grant Harrold told the BBC.

In a surprising turn of events, Princess Eugenie shunned the royal rulebook on her wedding day by borrowing the Greville Emerald Kokosnik tiara from the Buckingham Palace vaults.

The unexpected move was a sentimental nod to her grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, as the now-iconic piece was passed down to Her Majesty following the original owner heiress Margaret Greville’s death.

Designed by French jewellery giant Boucheron, the sparkler boasts a large focal emerald and is set amongst several impressive diamonds which she wore with matching earrings gifted to her from Jack Brooksbank – the perfect accessories for her soon-to-be-iconic Peter Pilotto gown.

Although details of the 2020 royal wedding are scarce, there’s one tiara which is sure to be in the running for the big day. According to multiple sources, the bride-to-be may well decide to pay homage to her mother the Duchess of York when she says “I do” in the very headpiece she wore to wed Prince Edward on July 23, 1986.

For the historic Westminster Abbey ceremony, Sarah Ferguson donned an unapologetically ’90s floral headpiece before revealing the York Diamond Tiara beneath when she took to the Buckingham Palace balcony post-wedding – a fabulous sartorial signifier of her new royal status.

Unlike previous royal brides, the tiara was reportedly brand new from royal jewellery go-to designer Garrard – a rumoured gift from the Queen and Prince Philip.

During her and Prince Andrew’s decade-long marriage, the Duchess of York frequently rewore the accessory and was last spotted wearing the sparkler back in 2001 for Elton John’s White Tie and Tiara Ball. Nothing like casually digging out your wedding tiara from the back of the wardrobe, huh?

If Princess Beatrice does decide to borrow the tiara she will follow in the fashionable footsteps of Kate and Meghan who both wore incredible heirlooms on their own wedding days.

For her 2011 Westminster Abbey ceremony, the Duchess of Cambridge wore a Cartier headpiece which was originally an anniversary gift from King George VI to his wife back in 1936 before being re-gifted to the Queen on her 18th birthday. Meanwhile, the Duchess of Sussex bid farewell to her Hollywood roots in Queen Mary’s Bandeau tiara which was made in 1932.

Not one to stick to her sartorial comfort zone – we’re talking that now-famous Philip Treacy hat she wore to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s 2011 nuptials to the sell-out Zimmerman dress she chose for her engagement photographs – the 31-year-old is sure to surprise us on the big day.

Being ninth in line to the throne gives her fashionable leeway to steer clear of the same royal traditions Kate and Meghan had to adhere to on their own wedding days too so fingers crossed she further cements her status as one of fashion’s rising darlings next year.

We can hear the wedding bells already.
