Prince Harry is engaged to Meghan Markle! The happy couple confirmed the news on Monday in the U.K. before giving an interview with BBC News.
While they shared the romantic story of how they met, fell in love, and became engaged, they also shared emotional words about Harry’s late mother Princess Diana.
“It’s days like today that I really I miss having her around and being able to share the happy news, but with the ring, and with everything else going on, I’m sure she’s with us,” Harry said.
“She’s with us,” Meghan said, nodding.
Harry spoke with the broadcaster about the ring he designed, which pays tribute to his late mother.
“The ring is yellow gold because that’s [Meghan’s] favourite. The main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds on the side are from my mother’s jewelry collection, to make sure she’s with us on this crazy journey together.”
“It’s beautiful,” Meghan said of the ring. “I think everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of Diana’s diamonds — and obviously not being able to meet his mum, it’s so important to to know that she is a part of this with us.”
“And being able to meet his aunts and Julia [Samuel], and just different people who were so important to his mum, I’m able to in some way know a part of her through them, and of course, him,” she continued. “It’s incredibly special to be able to have this, which links where you come from and Botswana, which is important to us.”
Botswana is significant to the couple, as they enjoyed a romantic and secluded vacation there after only two dates.
When asked what Diana would think of Meghan, Harry responded that his mother would have loved his fiancée.
“Oh, they’d be thick as thieves, without question. I think she’d be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know, so excited for me – but then, as I said, would have probably been best friends with Meghan. “
The newly engaged couple also spoke about Meghan’s relationship with the rest of the Royal family.
When asked about meeting the Queen, the actress replied: “I have. A couple of times, yeah. It’s incredible. A) to be able to meet her through his lens, not just with his honour and respect for her but the love and respect he has for her as his grandmother. All of those layers have been important to me. She’s an incredible women.”
Apparently, even the corgis really liked her – which makes us very jealous! They were “just laying on my feet during tea” Meghan said.
As for Prince Charles, Prince William and Kate Middleton, Harry said: “We’ve had a handful of teas and meetings over at his place (father’s). The family has absolutely been solid support.
“Catherine’s been absolutely amazing,” Meghan remarked of the Duchess of Cambridge.
“They’ve known for quite some time,” Harry said, adding how they kept it a secret amazed him.
