The Duchess of Cambridge visited Sunderland today for a taste of the district’s burgeoning arts scene firsthand (see what we did there?), emerging with fresh ink in the form of a floral design.

Henna artist Shajida Begum, 18, who drew the pattern on Kate Middleton’s hand, told reporters she offered to ink the Duchess when she walked past, news.com.au reports.

“I said, ‘would you like a design?’ and she was like, ‘yes, if you don’t mind,’” Begum says. “She was saying it was really pretty [and] I was just telling her how it works. I was telling her when can wash it off – I said, when it becomes flaky.”

For any worried royal well-wishers, People reports that natural brown henna is safe to use in pregnancy, but black henna, which contains a toxic dye called para-phenylenediamine (PPD) is not.

The Duchess also took away a pack of bindiis, which she said she would give to Princess Charlotte.
