Mr Madsen still denies murdering Ms Wall but has now told Copenhagen police that the journalist died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The inventor claims Ms Wall died inside his homemade submarine while he was on the deck, TIME reports.

Mr Madsen had previously claimed that Ms Wall was killed accidentally when she hit her head on a hatch of his submarine.

“I lose my foothold and the hatch shuts,” the inventor told originally told a Copenhagen court. He said the journalist was then knocked on the ground.

However, this version of events was refuted by the discovery of Ms Wall’s head in Danish waters, which displayed no signs of fractures.

As 7 News reports, Danish police have indicated that the inventor will now also be charged with sexual assault without intercourse. Ms Wall was found with interior and exterior stab wounds to her genitals.

“Kim Wall had suffered 14 stabs in and around the genitals and it is due to these stabs that we have said that there must have been a sexual motive,” police spokesman Jens Moller Jensen alleged.

Ms Wall disappeared after she boarded Mr Madsen’s home-made submarine on August 10. Ms Wall’s boyfriend alerted police when the reporter didn’t arrive home, after boarding the ship for what was supposed to be just a few hours for a story.

Police identified the torso of a woman they found on August 21 in Danish waters, south of Copenhagen, as Ms Wall. The body was missing its head, arms and legs.

Mr Madsen was meant to appear in court on Tuesday, but will now be kept in custody until 15 November.
