Just one day after Pepsi debuted its new commercial starring model-of-the-moment Kendall Jenner, the company has pulled the ad following global outrage.
The ad features the model posing for a photoshoot with a protest going on outside. Jenner then decides to join the protest, and hands a police officer a can of Pepsi.
The commercial has been widely condemned for its blatant insensitivity after it was compared to a powerful image from a Black Lives Matter protest.
Pepsi have now pulled the commercial and apologized to Kendall Jenner.
“Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding,” the company said in a statement on Wednesday.
“Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologise. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are removing the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologise for putting Kendall Jenner in this position.”
Jenner has not commented on the controversy but has also removed all evidence of it from her Instagram account.
Social media was quick to respond after the controversial commercial aired.
