The reference to Azaria Chamberlain’s tragic 1980 death sparked a Twitter storm, with many labelling Jackson’s use of the phrase as tone-deaf and inappropriate. Such has been the response that Jackson has now apologised.

The 19-year-old model has since taken to Twitter to express her “sincerest apologies” for the joke that she shared on Instagram.

“I was referencing a meme,” she wrote in response to a Seven news story. “I had no clue it stemmed from such a tragic and horrific incident. My sincerest apologies, from the bottom of my [heart emoji.]”

She then took a jab at Australian media who were rather harsh to her following her Melbourne Cup visit.

“It breaks my heart to have visited the most beautiful country I’ve ever seen and may ever see, and meet the kindest most genuine people, and then be shredded to pieces by their monstrous media,” she wrote.

And while the words of selected Australian media was “cruel,” she says she “can’t wait to come back.”

The star even took to Instagram to share a snap of The Great Barrier Reef and stated: “I was really moved by the GBR and Im excited to get involved in its protection programs, and everyone else was so kind and full of love and it made my heart happy. most of y’all were a ray of sunshine during a cloudy couple of weeks for me.
