A British hospital worker has been arrested in relation to the murder of eight newborn babies and attempted murder of another six, while working at Countess of Chester Hospital in Cheshire, northern England.
The Sun reports that police have searched the home of 28-year-old nurse Lucy Letby after launching an investigation into the higher-than-normal rate of newborn deaths at the hospital between June 2015 and June 2016.
According to The Telegraph, the hospital first launched an internal inquiry after finding that premature babies who had collapsed with heart and lung failure were unusually impossible to resuscitate. They also developed strange blotches on their arms and legs after death.
Police are currently investigating the deaths of 17 babies at the hospital, and 15 non-fatal collapses.
The Sun reports that Letby’s colleagues are stunned by her arrest.
