Nicole Kidman Breaks Down During Emotional Emmys Acceptance Speech

"Domestic violence is a complicated, insidious disease"

Nicole Kidman has addressed the stigma surrounding domestic violence in a powerful acceptance speech at the 2017 Emmy Awards. On stage to accept Best Lead Actress for her role in Big Little Lies, the actress became teary as she thanked her family, before turning the spotlight onto one of the mini-series’ major themes.

“I have two little girls and my darling Keith, who I asked to help me pursue this artistic path, and they have to sacrifice so much for it,” an emotional Kidman said. “This is yours. I want my little girls to have this on their shelf and to look at it and think when my mum didn’t put me to bed, it’s because of this.”

The actress then changed tact to talk domestic abuse. “It is a complicated, insidious disease,” she said. “It exists far more than we allow ourselves to know.”

“It is filled with shame and secrecy. By you acknowledging me with this award it shines a light on it even more, so thank you.”

Kidman began her speech by acknowledging her co-star Reese Witherspoon. “Without you I wouldn’t be standing here,” she said.

So far, Big Little Lies has also won Outstanding Limited Series at the 69th Primetime Emmys Awards.
