Critically-acclaimed documentary Strong Island hits screens on September 15, and promises to be your next Netflix obsession.

From first time director Yance Ford, the film centres around the murder of his brother William Jr Ford in Long Island, New York, more than 20 years ago. At age 24, teacher William was allegedly gunned down by a white teenager. William was unarmed at the time. And yet he became the prime suspect in his own murder.

While Strong Island dissects William’s death, it also offers a compelling account of the filmmaker’s family and considers the history of injustice against black men in America.

According to Netflix, Strong Island questions “what one can do when the grief of loss is entwined with historical injustice, and how one grapples with the complicity of silence, which can bind a family in an imitation of life, and a nation with a false sense of justice”.

We’ll be watching.
