Twitter, on your average day, usually features hashtags of trending news and politics that are on the most part, uninspiring. That was changed when an empowering wave of heartfelt mother appreciation posts appeared on the #MyMum thread. The now-viral threat shares the raw and humbling stories of our motherโs lives that often go untold.
The stories reveal the very real sacrifices, selflessness and tough times that mothers have weathered to ensure their families survive. The versions that acknowledge and appreciate the greatness their mothers could have achieved if theyโd grown up sans discrimination and hardship.
The moment was sparked by Labor leader Bill Shorten who shared the story of his own mother on ABCโs Q&A on Monday night. Shorten was visibly moved as he shared that his late โbrilliantโ mum, Ann Shorten, was his political inspiration. โShe was the first in our family to ever go to universityโฆshe wanted to be a lawyer, but she was the eldest in the family and needed to take the teacher scholarship to look after the rest of the kidsโฆI know if she had other opportunities she could have done anything,โ he said.
โMy point is this, what motivates me, if you really want to know who Bill Shorten is, I canโt make it right for my mum but I can make it right for everyone else.โ

Following his impassioned speech, many took to Twitter to share their own stories of sacrifice. Itโs seriously powerful.
