Twitter, on your average day, usually features hashtags of trending news and politics that are on the most part, uninspiring. That was changed when an empowering wave of heartfelt mother appreciation posts appeared on the #MyMum thread. The now-viral threat shares the raw and humbling stories of our mother’s lives that often go untold.
The stories reveal the very real sacrifices, selflessness and tough times that mothers have weathered to ensure their families survive. The versions that acknowledge and appreciate the greatness their mothers could have achieved if they’d grown up sans discrimination and hardship.
The moment was sparked by Labor leader Bill Shorten who shared the story of his own mother on ABC’s Q&A on Monday night. Shorten was visibly moved as he shared that his late “brilliant” mum, Ann Shorten, was his political inspiration. “She was the first in our family to ever go to university…she wanted to be a lawyer, but she was the eldest in the family and needed to take the teacher scholarship to look after the rest of the kids…I know if she had other opportunities she could have done anything,” he said.
“My point is this, what motivates me, if you really want to know who Bill Shorten is, I can’t make it right for my mum but I can make it right for everyone else.”
Following his impassioned speech, many took to Twitter to share their own stories of sacrifice. It’s seriously powerful.
