This Netflix Film Is Generating Oscars Buzz Already

Starring Carey Mulligan

It’s predicted to be the first Netflix film in the running to win an Oscar, and one look at the gripping trailer for Mudbound makes it easy to see why. Directed by Dee Rees (who could become the first black woman to ever be nominated for Best Director, Variety reports) Mudbound is a 1940s tale with frightening parallels with today’s sad reality: a world wrought with racial tensions, violence and men and women struggling to break free from social dictates.

Set in ‘40s Mississippi and starring Carey Mulligan, Jason Mitchell, Mary J. Bilge, Garrett Hedlund and Jason Clarke, Mudbound centres around the plight of two families, one black and one white. After generating serious buzz at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, it failed to find a distributor until Netflix made an offer of $12.5 million. Watch the trailer below:

Mudbound screens on Netflix on November 17.
