Every year, there are a handful of names that everyone seems to be naming their kids. Often it’s influenced by a certain movie character or a famous person or baby. Or, parents stick with one of the classics.
So what are the most popular names of 2019?
Every year, British parenting site Baby Centre release a list of the most popular baby names, according to actual births in the UK. And they’ve just released their mid-year findings for 2019.
Unsurprisingly, Archie is among them. It’s playful yet proper, and it has the royal tick of approval from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Fellow royal cousins George and Charlotte’s names also made the cut (sorry Louis!).
Consistent favourites year after year include Olivia, Sophia, Muhammad and Oliver; while Baby Centre says animal and botanical names are on the up. “Willow is new into the top 20 while Ivy climbed two places to number 16. Robyn, Raven, Rowan and Sage were also all boosted as a new generation of parents are increasingly conscious of the climate crisis,” says the site.
It seems a certain TV show was a favourite source of inspiration, and it’s not what you’d expect. There was a strong preference for Game Of Thrones–related names this year.
“Maisie (Williams, who played Arya) and Emilia (Clarke, the actor behind Daenerys) both stormed up the charts. Meanwhile character names Tyrion and Theon rose in popularity and 2019 has even seen one registration for the unusual double character name combo of Arya Cersei,” revealed Baby Centre.
