When Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher first got together in 2012, the public were pretty excited that the longtime friends finally made it work romantically.
Turns out though, it wasn’t exactly love at first sight for the two. In an interview with Howard Stern, Mila revealed that she and Ashton actually decided to be friends with benefits when they first got together. She began saying “I don’t even know If I’m supposed to tell this story — I might get in trouble for this, well, whatever.” But then she told us anyway, so here’s the whole seriously rom-com story:
After working together for eight years on That ’70s Show, the pair thought there wasn’t really much chemistry between them.
“Here’s the crazy part, and I say this and nobody believes me. I never looked at him as somebody that was good looking,” Mila said. “I never looked at him as somebody that wasn’t. I just was like, here’s a guy that I’m working with for eight years and he’s really smart. And I had to do chemistry and he was better at chemistry than I was so he’d help me with my chemistry homework and when I was grounded he would drive me home.”
It wasn’t until several years later, when Kutcher had just split from the cougariffic Demi Moore, and Mila had split from Macauley Culkin, that they rekindled.
“We ran into each other out and about at an awards show (probably 2012 Oscars),” she said, “So I see this guy and I see his back. And he’s really tall and I’m like, who’s that tall guy? And I’m wearing this big poofy dress and I look ridiculous and then he just turns around and it’s literally like if we were in a movie the music would start playing and the violins would go. I think he, for the first time, ever took my breath away. I was like, f*ck he’s good looking.”
Ashton invited Mila to his housewarming party, with the intention of setting her up with one of his mates, but it was her and Ashton who had the real chemistry.
“Long story short, I didn’t leave until the next morning,” she continued, “Then we ended up having a lot of talks about how this is a huge mistake and how he needs to go and be single and how I need to go and be single. It was super private for a very long time.”
Mila also revealed it was the “first time ever” she had stayed at a boy’s house after a hook-up.
“When I was single I was so adamant about, as stupid as it sounds, never staying over at a guy’s house,” she said. “I was like, peace I’m out, and he was like, you’re not leaving.”
Mila said they both didn’t want it to be anything more, and said they’d tell each other about the other people they were seeing. She added though, “Three months later I was like, this isn’t fun anymore.”
Mila also joked about the obvious irony, “We oddly both did a movie (Friends with Benefits and No Strings Attached), and if we had paid attention to these movies, we should know shit like this doesn’t work out! We clearly didn’t pay attention, and we shook hands and were like, ‘Let’s just have fun’… I mean literally we lived out our movies.”
