Meghan Markle Hopes Her Baby Will Be A Feminist

The royal got candid on International Women’s Day

After it was announced that Meghan Markle would be speaking on a panel alongside the likes of Julia Gillard and Adwoa Aboah this International Women’s Day, we couldn’t wait to see what the royal said about feminism and female issues. And, as usual, she didn’t disappoint.

Taking to the stage alongside the fellow successful women, the Duchess of Sussex admitted she hopes her baby will be a feminist — regardless of their sex.

“I’d seen this documentary on Netflix about feminism and one of the things they said during pregnancy was ‘I feel the embryonic kicking of feminism’,” she said, as per ABC News.

“I love that. So boy or girl or whatever it is, we hope that that’s the case with our little bump.”

Apart from admitting she watches Netflix (we wonder what she thinks of The Crown?), the discussion turned to how she thinks of feminism and what it means for men, too. Making a point about confidence, the Duchess confirmed that for women to become empowered, men needed to embrace equality with open arms.

“For men to understand they can be feminists as well. You understand that your strength includes knowing your vulnerabilities. And your sense of self and security, your confidence, comes in knowing that a woman by your side, not behind you, is actually something you shouldn’t be threatened about, but as opposed to that you should feel really empowered in having that additional support. That this is really about us working together, that’s what gender equality means to me,” she told the audience.

It’s one of the most candid conversations Markle has had about the topic since assuming her royal duties in 2018, and will no doubt not be the last — especially if the couple welcome a baby girl in April.
