A celebration of fearless females

There was an undeniable sense of female empowerment at the Max Mara Spring/Summer 2020 show during Milan Fashion Week yesterday.

Between the army of top models like Kaia Gerber, Joan Smalls, Bella Hadid and Gigi Hadid who marched in unison down the runway, to the strong, structured clothes of spy-inspired trench coats, slinky yet utilitarian racerback column dresses, and three-piece power suits, it was clear this collection was for women who run the world.

Max Mara’s SS20 collection was inspired by female heroines, with inspiration stemming from iconic female characters in pop culture, like British comic-strip spy Modesty Blaise and Killing Eve assassin Villanelle.

Behind the statement beauty look was makeup artist Tom Pecheux and hairstylist Sam McKnight. For the hair, which featured tightly-braided twin plaits, McKnight was inspired by a Hans Feurer photograph he found in a ’70s-era issue of Nova magazine. The combat-inspired hairstyle supported the collection’s women-in-power vibe perfectly.

The makeup also commanded attention. Pecheux applied a powder-blue eyeshadow to the lids and made a statement with a contrasting ultra-dark, almost black, matte lip.

It was a lesson in rule-breaking that shouldn’t be ignored for the season ahead.
