On the off chance that you were actually enjoying your long weekend, you may have missed the strange Katy Perry event that was occurring from Thursday to Sunday.
As promotion for her new album Witness, Perry conducted a 24/7 ‘Big Brother’ style livestream on YouTube.
The 32-year old singer invited viewers into her Los Angeles home as she slept, did yoga, cuddled her dog Nugget and chatted with a bevy of celebrities that showed up to her door.
Despite putting her life under observation with 41 cameras, the most authentic moment from the four-day series came when she sat down with Siri Singh from the Viceland series The Therapist.
Perry, born Katheryn Hudson to conservative Christian parents in California, admitted that she struggled to handle the overarching attention that fame brought.
“I’m ashamed because of course Katy Perry is so strong, but it’s hard because I feel ashamed that I would even have those thoughts and feel that low or that depressed.”
“I’m human and I’m living under this crazy microscope,” she said as tears smudged her mascara.
“Look at Katy Perry – she’s so glamorous, she’s rich, she’s luxurious, successful and, like, Katheryn Hudson – I didn’t have any money, I didn’t have any influence, I didn’t have anything.”
In the past, Perry has been open with her struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts. Talking to Singh, the singer was brought to tears when discussing her tumultuous relationship with her mental health.
“I wrote a song about [suicide],” said Perry. “I feel ashamed that I would have those thoughts, feel that low and that depressed.
“You can be right or you can be loved. I just want to be loved.”
And while she says therapy has helped her, she still faces challenges when trying to be her authentic self, as promoting her public image feels as if she “lives under this crazy microscope.”
She even attributed her drastic hairstyle change to this attempt to retain more authenticity in her life: “I want to be my authentic self 100 percent, so it hurts when I don’t feel that I can.”
The livestream has just recently ended, with Perry hosting an intimate L.A Concert for 1000 fans.
