It Turns Out, Jennifer Aniston And Matt LeBlanc Were Against Their Onscreen Romance Too

The one where everyone agrees it should never have happened...

More than a decade has passed since Friends left our television screens but we’re still fiercely protective of Ross and Rachel’s relationship.

So much so, that we’ll never recover from the one where Rachel kisses Joey – leaving Ross, well, most certainly not “fine”.

Thankfully, it turns out that Jennifer Aniston and Matt LeBlanc were equally disapproving of the surprising storyline.

According to Dr Simone Knox, who co-authored a book on the cult ’90s series, LeBlanc raised concerns over the controversial romance with producers.

Knox learned of the actor’s disapproval of the storyline during a conversation with executive producer Kevin S. Bright.

“He [Bright] told us when they first started floating the idea of a storyline involving Joey developing feelings for Rachel that Matt LeBlanc was very uncomfortable with this,” she told the Daily Express.

“He said these actors were so invested in their characterisations, and Matt LeBlanc’s objection was: ‘Joey wouldn’t do that.'”

“Joey is many things: He’s a womaniser; he is into his food; but he’s also a very loyal friend,” Knox continued.

“So Joey would never go for Rachel because that would be devastating for Ross. But in this case they went for it because, I guess, they thought they would get some interesting storylines.”

But LeBlanc wasn’t the only member of the famous cast who disapproved of the blossoming relationship, as Aniston also made sure to voice her opinions.

Author of ‘I’ll Be There For You: The One About Friends’, Kelsey Miller, revealed in her book that Aniston made sure that Joey and Rachel’s attraction was purely physical.

“Aniston wanted it to be made clear that Rachel was not in love with Joey, but was just attracted to him,” Miller wrote. “It had to be a crush, and it had to be more funny than emotional, otherwise, this arc would go from risky to unwatchable.”

But we may finally be able to check in on Ross and Rachel’s relationship with speculation rife that the cast are set to reunite.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, an unscripted special is in the works to commemorate the show’s 25th anniversary in 2020.

Aniston teased the announcement during a surprise appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“Listen, we would love for there to be something, but we don’t know what that something is,” the actress hinted. “So we’re just trying. We’re working on something…”

Until then, we have our Sunday Netflix binge to rely on when we’re in need of a good old catch up.
