It’s an understatement to say that the world was invested in the relationship between Channing Tatum and his ex-wife, Jenna Dewan. The pair, who met on the set of Step Up in 2006 and married in 2009 were the seemingly perfect Hollywood couple.
But of course, life is rarely that simple, and after nine years of marriage, the couple officially divorced in November 2019. Tatum has since found happiness with actress Zoë Kravitz, while Dewan has been coupled up with Broadway star Steve Kazee since 2018.
Since their divorce, the pair (who also share a child together) have remained respectful of each other’s privacy and have chosen not to say too much about their split. But six years later, with both happily in other relationships and their many invested fans having almost recovered from the breakup news, Tatum has finally opened up about his divorce from Dewan.
In a recent Vanity Fair interview, Tatum explained that the pair’s differences were the real cause of their relationship breakdown.
“I think we told ourselves a story when we were young, and we just kept telling ourselves that story, no matter how blatantly life was telling us that we were so different,” Tatum said, further explaining that parenting only highlighted those differences.
“When you’re actually parents, you really understand the differences between the two of you. Because it is screaming at you all day long. How you parent differently, how you look at the world, how you go through the world.”
Tatum went on to say that despite these differences, the couple didn’t let go of their relationship easily.
“We fought for it for a really long time, even though we both sort of knew that we had sort of grown apart,” Tatum explained.
But break ups aren’t easy and Tatum didn’t hold back from discussing the more difficult parts of the separation.
“In the beginning, it was super scary and terrifying. Your life just turns on its axis. This whole plan that you had literally just turns into sand and goes through your fingers and you’re just like, ‘Oh, shit. What now?’”
However, once the divorce was finalised, Tatum was able to turn his focus to himself and his daughter, Everly (9).
“It just started with my daughter. I just dropped everything and just focused on her. And it was truly the best possible thing that I ever could have done. Because in the alone time that I have with just me and her, we’ve become best friends.”
Tatum’s divorce is now long behind him and the Magic Mike actor has been dating Big Little Lies actress Zoë Kravitz since working on her Pussy Island film together.
Since getting together, the couple have kept relatively low key about their relationship, presumably enjoying their privacy as a new couple.
And while those pictures of Zoe and Channing bike riding through New York enough to send the internet wild, Tatum doubts if you’ll ever find him at the wedding altar ever again.
“I don’t know if I’m ever going to get married again,” he told the publication.
With or without a ring involved, we’re looking forward to seeing more of these two enjoying their future together.
