According to Variety, the small screen project has been acquired by HBO as part of director Adam McKay’s five-year television deal with the network under his new company Hyperobject Industries.
The currently untitled series will be based on Miami Herald investigative reporter Julie K. Brown’s forthcoming book on Epstein after her reporting became a famous driving force behind the disgraced financier’s eventual arrest in July on sex trafficking charges.
McKay and Brown will work as executive producers on the series alongside McKay’s producing partner, Kevin Messick. It’s not the first time McKay, the man behind Step Brothers and Vice, has worked on a HBO project either, as he recently acted as executive producer on comedy-drama series Succession.
“We are delighted to continue our longtime collaboration with Adam McKay with this new deal,” HBO programming president Casey Bloys said in a statement. “Adam is a uniquely talented director and producer, and we are looking forward to working with him and the team at Hyperobject on many projects to come.”
Epstein graced the headlines in July after the scandal broke largely down to the fact that he was known to associate with a number of political heavyweights from Donald Trump to Bill Clinton.
While his rumoured friendship with Prince Edward also rocked Buckingham Palace after the royal came under scrutiny across the globe.
In his defence, the Duke of York announced in a statement: “During the time I knew him, I saw him infrequently and probably no more than only once or twice a year.”
“I have stayed in a number of his residences. At no stage during the limited time I spent with him did I see, witness or suspect any behaviour of the sort that subsequently led to his arrest and conviction.”
Epstein was found dead back in prison on August 10 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking. Although it was ruled an “apparent suicide”, speculation is rife that the billionaire was murdered.
Further details on the upcoming television series have yet to be released.
