What do Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence and Mariska Hargitay have in common?
They all met last week to celebrate the premiere of a new docu-series, Woman.
Hosted and co-produced by feminist icon Gloria Steinem – and aired on Viceland – Woman documents the ways in which violence against women drives global instability.
Even the series’ trailer is inspiring. It opens with the words: “I only want to remind you and me tonight what what we’re talking about… is a revolution.”
“I’ve travelled the world as a writer and an activist my entire life, and I can tell you that by confronting the problems once marginalized as women’s issues, we can tackle the greatest dangers of the 21st century…Behind every major crisis, there’s an unseen factor at play, there’s a story you’ve never been told. The greatest indicator of the world’s stability, wealth and safety is the status of women.”
The eight-episode season travels to a range of regions around the globe, from Colombia, where it speaks to women involved in FARC, Canada, where it looks at the hundreds of women who have gone missing and been murdered.
Viceland is not currently available on Australian television.
