The ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel Starring Naomi Watts Has Been Cancelled

What?!

Update, 31/10/2019: It looks like we’re not going back to Westeros as soon as we first thought. Per a report from Deadline, a pilot episode of the prequel that Naomi Watts was starring in (the show’s name was never confirmed) was filmed, but apparently, it was “not well received” and HBO didn’t pick it up.

According to Deadline, the cast and crew have been informed that the project will not be moving forwards.

Original, 25/06/2019: If you’ve been noticing a large Game of Thrones shaped hole in your life over the past month, you’re not alone. After over a decade with the show, it makes sense that fans are finding it hard to come to terms with the fact that the Starks, Lannisters and Targaryens are no more. But thankfully, the show’s prequel has finally started filming and actress Naomi Watts says we “won’t be disappointed” with what’s to come.

The show, which will take place 5000 years prior to Game of Thrones, hasn’t yet been given a name, however, ‘Bloodmoon’ and ‘The Long Night’ are both firm contenders. With Game of Thrones author George R.R Martin working on the project alongside showrunner Jane Goldman (X-Men: First Class), director S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones) and Watts acting as a “charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret,” Watts told the Associated Press that she thinks fans “won’t be let down.”

The actress actress also revealed how nervous she was to take on the role, given how much of a cultural phenomen Game of Thrones became. “It is intimidating. It’s very exciting,” she said. “And yes, having just come off the last series, where the world was blowing up over it. Everything was Game Of Thrones related. All the advertising on TV, every article – everyone’s jumping on that bandwagon. So, it is scary.”

Though not much is known yet about the show’s theme, according to HBO’s official synopsis, we may finally figure out what the deal is with the White Walkers. “From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: It’s not the story we think we know,” reads the description.
