Pippa Middleton has appeared in public wearing a huge diamond ring.  And she has told reporters that she “couldn’t be happier”.

The news broke yesterday that Middleton, the 32-year-old sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, was engaged to financier James Matthews, 40.

Mr Matthews asked Miss Middleton’s father for permission before he proposed, the Daily Mail reported, because he is a “traditionalist” and “wanted to do things properly”.

Middleton and Matthews first dated in 2012 before parting ways – and reunited in 2015. The pair have been spotted vacation in St. Barts with the Middleton family, and most recently looking loved-up court-side at Wimbledon.

Middleton’s ring is estimated to have cost GBP200,000 ($AUD350,000). According to London’s The Telegraph the central stone is thought to be at least three carats. It has Art Deco aesthetic, and it possibly an Asscher cut diamond.

Royal watchers are already describing the impending nuptials “the society wedding of the year”. But what we want to know is: will the Duchess of Cambridge be maid of honour?
