A father was sentenced to life in prison earlier today for the murder of his 22-month-old baby, who he intentionally left in a hot car for seven hours.
ABC News reports Justin Ross Harris, 35, will not be eligible for parole, and was sentenced to an additional 32 years jail on other charges.
Harris’ son Cooper died on June 18 two years ago after spending seven hours in a the car seat of his father’s locked SUV in Georgia, USA.
The prosecutor, Chuck Boring, said that Cooper died in the most “torturous, horrific, unimaginable way possible.”
“There is no justification,” he said.
The jury found that Harris had “callously walked away and left that child in a hot car, in June, in Georgia, in the summer to swelter and die.”
They found him guilty of all eight charges against him: malice murder, two counts of felony murder, cruelty to children in the first degree, cruelty to children in the second degree, criminal attempt to commit a felony and two counts of dissemination of harmful material to minors.
A number of the charges came from a sexually explicit online encounter Harris had had with an underage girl. Prosecutors argued that he had been having many online affairs with underage girls.
Further, they argued that the reason he had murdered his 22-month-old son was so that he could live a child-free life and be free to pursue other women.
Cobb County district attorney Vic Reynolds said that now that the trial is over, there has finally been “justice for Cooper Harris.”
