Devastated that Big Little Lies has come to an end? Looking how to the fill the gaping void that has been left in your Monday night viewing time? You’re in luck.
Word from Liane Moriarty — the Australian author extraordinaire who penned Big Little Lies, The Husband’s Secret, Truly Madly Guilty and more than a handful of other best sellers — is that series stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon have asked her to brainstorm ideas for a second series.
“I have started to think about ways this could continue,” Moriarty told The Sydney Morning Herald. “I wouldn’t write a new book, but perhaps a new story, and then we’ll see what happens.”
The reports fly in the face of rumours that director Jean-Marc Vallee and reportedly US network HBO, were against a second series.
Yet even Vallee is now changing his tune, saying: “If there’s an opportunity to re-unite with Reese, Nicole, and these characters, of course, I’ll be a part of it.”
Witherspoon was moved to tears at the Televisions Critics Association Winter Press Tour when talking about Big Little Lies as an unusual opportunity for several women to get meaty parts, especially in a film and TV industry filled with stories driven by men. Kidman agreed, saying it’s “rare to find five roles in a piece that we would all jump to play.”
While it may be tricky to conceive of a plot that could rival the unexpected twists and turns of season one, if there’s anyone who could make it happen it’s Moriarty, who has hinted the second installment would focus on Bonnie’s untold story and Celeste’s grief.
Stay tuned.
