She’s a former Australian of the Year awards finalist and has spent her time in the public eye discussing her traumatic life as a child bride.
Eman Sharobeem claimed that her parents forced her marry her cousin when she was just 15.
But as The Sydney Morning Herald reports in an exclusive, many details of Ms Sharobeem’s past is mere fabrication.
Ms Sharobeem, who is currently under investigation by the Independent Commission Against Corruption, actually married as an adult at age 21.
Ms Sharobeem ran the non-profit Immigrant Womens Health Service and the Non-English Speaking Housing services, which assisted disadvantaged migrant women in need.
She is accused of allegedly using $685,000 of public funds for personal expenses.
The ABC repots that ICAC heard the former Australian of the Year finalist spent $20,000 on a diamond necklace, a fountain for her home, and hair appointments.
Other personal expenses allegedly funded through fraudulent invoices included holidays, cosmetic surgery, a luxury car, clothing, home renovations and gym memberships.
The SMH found that just days after Ms Sharobeem was forced to give evidence at the corruption commission, her family transferred more than $500,000 from a Sydney property to her nephew in Egypt.
In June, Ms Sharobeem told the corruption inquiry that any accounting mistakes she made while fronting a Sydney charity were as a result of being overworked and underpaid.
“I was underpaid and overworked so if any wrongdoing happened … it’s not because it’s my intention, it’s because I was overstretched,” she said, The Guardian reports.
“And I was also doing a lot of volunteer work, I don’t want you to feel that I did this deliberately.”
