Given that she works on the breakfast show, she has to get up at 3:30am every weekday, and the simplest solution for her and boyfriend Neil Varcoe both was to sleep apart.

“Probably the secret to our relationship is we sleep apart,” Bartholomew told Mamamia.

“During the week he sleeps in one room and I sleep in the other.”

While they tried sleeping in the same bed for the first two years of their relationship, it was too difficult.

“I would wake him up every morning at 3am … he could just never go back to sleep and then we were both tired and it was a total disaster,” Bartholomew said.

“We just started to resent each other.”

They have tried making some other small changes so that they are still connected, despite getting to sleep in the same bed.

“We set up a noticeboard in our kitchen so that when I leave for work I leave him a note and then when I wake up there’s something there,” Bartholomew said.

“It can’t be a chore, it has to be something nice. One time I remember we had a big fight at night time and the next morning he wrote, ‘I love you even when I hate you’.”

But this isn’t unusual for many couples. One study suggested that one in four couples don’t sleep in the same bed. Other famous couples that don’t sleep in the same bed include the Queen and Prince Phillip, and Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter.
