Women in Northern Ireland are now being supplied with abortion pills through the use of drones.
It is illegal to administer a drug to induce an abortion in Northern Ireland (unless the mother’s life is in danger), so feminist charity Women On Waves arranged to send a drone from The Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland carrying mifepristone and misoprostol, which can be taken up to nine weeks into pregnancy to induce a termination.
“Research by the world health organisation has proven that an abortion with pills can be done safely at home by women themselves till 10 weeks of pregnancy. The health impact is similar to a miscarriage. Restrictive abortion laws will not keep women from accessing abortion pills, by ship, by mail, through the internet, drone or RC speedboat!” says Dr. Rebecca Gomperts of Women on Waves.
Women On Waves runs a ship that provides abortions for women who are unable to access them on land due to local laws.
They said the “Abortion drone” was sent partly out of solidarity with women who are currently being prosecuted for procuring abortions in Northern Ireland.
In April, a 21-year-old Northern Ireland woman was given a suspended prison sentence after ordering abortion pills online.
In Ireland, women who wish to undergo an abortion must travel overseas, even in cases of rape, incest and when the foetus wouldn’t survive.
