US President Donald Trump has been slammed for his “tasteless” tribute to legendary singer Aretha Franklin, who passed away at her home in Detroit yesterday.
Firstly, the POTUS took to Twitter to share his condolences.
“The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, is dead,” he wrote. “She was a great woman, with a wonderful gift from God, her voice. She will be missed!”

However, he should have left it there, as later when speaking to the press ahead of a cabinet meeting, it all went downhill.

”I want to begin today by expressing my condolences to the family of a person I knew well,” Trump said.
“She worked for me on numerous occasions. She was terrific — Aretha Franklin — on her passing. She brought joy to millions of lives and her extraordinary legacy will thrive and inspire many generations to come.

“She was given a great gift from God — her voice, and she used it well. People loved Aretha. She was a special woman. So just want to pass on my warmest best wishes and sympathies to her family.”
While it remains unclear what the President meant by his claim that the singer “worked” for him, some reports suggest he could be referring to that fact that she performed at his Trump Castle Casino in 1988 as well as the Trump Taj Mahal Casino in the 1990s.
The White House has not responded to questions over the statement.
Unsurprisingly, the statement did not go down well and has been slammed online as tasteless, disrespectful and racist.
…….worked for him?? Does he mean he once paid her for a private performance (which is common with many celebrities; Bruno Mars once performed at a party for $1M)? Because that is the only way this statement would make sense.

2. I'm assuming Queen Aretha, at some point, did a show at one of Trump's casinos..I can't figure out any other way she would have worked for him and of course I can't fathom why anyone would make that reference on the day one of the most important women in music passed away.

Trump’s “tribute” to Aretha Franklin sounds about as close as you can get to a slave owner:
— Michael (@MichaelBense) August 16, 2018
“She worked for me on numerous occasions”
OBAMAS ON ARETHA: "Graced with a glimpse of the divine."
— Peter Daou (@peterdaou) August 16, 2018
CLINTONS ON ARETHA: "One of America's greatest national treasures."
TRUMP ON ARETHA: "She worked for me."#ArethaFranklin
When Trump says Aretha "worked for him many times," he says with the arrogance of a slave owner…

News from today: Trump thinks Aretha Franklin "worked for" him, and Trump's Ego Parade is now going to cost almost $100M. The effing gall of this man disgusts me to my very core.
