A mother who had been breastfeeding her eight-month-old baby just moments before the horrific attack at Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall last week has woken from a coma.
Nethra Krishnamurthy had returned to work from maternity leave just days before and was visiting her son at his daycare center to feed before she was caught up in the vicious attack.
Ms Krishnamurthy underwent emergency surgery after sustaining serious injuries, including deep lacerations to her head, a punctured lung, damage to her liver and kidneys, broken ribs and fractures to her spine in three different places.
She remains in intensive care in a critical, but stable condition.

The couple do not have any family in Australia and have had collegaues stepping in to help look after their young son so husband Mohan Kumar could be by his wife’s side.
“They don’t have any family in Australia, which makes it really tough,” her boss Mathew Coleman tells The Herald Sun.
“So we’ve had people offering to cook meals, do shopping for them, and one colleague is looking after the baby so Mohan can be at the hospital.”
A MyCause page has been set up to help support the family and has currently raised over $100,000.
