‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2 Is Coming Sooner Than You Think

Reese Witherspoon has cleared her schedule

Season one of Big Little Lies had barely finished when talk of season two started – both from fans and the show’s stars alike. Now – finally! – we have what sounds like rock solid intel that HBO will commence filming for season two in the first half of 2018.

According to TVLine, which broke the news, the Emmy Award-winning series, which is based on the book by Australian author Liane Moriarty and stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman (who won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for her efforts), Zoe Kravitz and Laura Dern, will keep director Jean-Marc Vallée on board.

Vallée, who at first shut down rumours of a sequel, seemed to have changed his mind by the Emmys, when he said backstage that “it’d be great to reunite the team and to do it.”

Moriarty also expressed interest in a sequel after the show’s Emmys success, saying she was “thinking about” her characters’ plot lines. As Witherspoon pointed out back in August, “the ball is definitely in her court because these characters were born out of her mind and her imagination and we just want to see if she’s interested in creating more story about these characters.”

The news of HBO’s filming plans comes after Witherspoon cleared her schedule by droping out of Pale Blue Dot, a sci-fi film she’s been attached to since 2015, W Magazine reports. She’s also got another TV show in the works with Jennifer Aniston and Apple TV, slated for production next year.

Witherspoon has been vocal in her enthusiasm for a second season, posting the above photo to Instagram in May with the caption, “spending #SundayFunday with these ladies… working on some new lies.”
