A US mother has spoken out about the dangers of letting other people kiss a newborn baby after the tragic death of her 18-month-old daughter.
As CNN reports, infant Mariana Sifrit contracted viral meningitis, that was linked to HSV-1, when she was just a week old. HSV-1 is a form of herpes that can cause cold sores.
On Facebook, Iowa mother Nicole Sifrit shared a touching tribute to her daughter.
“Our princess Mariana Reese Sifrit gained her angel wings at 8:41 am this morning in her daddy’s arms and her mommy right beside her. She is now no longer suffering and is with the Lord,” she wrote.
“In her 18 days of life she made a huge impact on the world and we hope with Mariana’s Story we save numerous newborns life,” she continued.
Both parents were reportedly tested for HSV and came back negative. Doctors speculate Mariana came into contact with the virus when she was kissed by someone carrying it, ABC News reports.
Mother Nicole issued a warning to all other mothers about protecting newborns
“Just keep your babies isolated,” she told WQAD. “Just don’t let anyone come and visit them. Make sure [visitors] constantly are washing their hands. Don’t let people kiss your baby. Make sure they ask before they pick up your baby.”
