A Sydney couple has been left devastated by the news that a Sydney hospital accidentally cremated their stillborn baby.

9News reports that the couple, Stella Pirko and Anthony Meyers, had asked Liverpool Hospital to carry out an autopsy on their baby, Krystal Rose, to discover what had caused the issue so that they knew for future.

Krystal Rose was born at 28 weeks, after Stella was forced to terminate her pregnancy due to the babyโ€™s enlarged bladder.

However, Liverpool Hospital left her in the mortuary for nine days, before she was released to the funeral home by accident to be cremated.

The couple spoke to Gabriella Rogers of Nine News about the incident.

โ€œI was a mother without a baby, and itโ€™s so hard,โ€ Stella said.

โ€œWe trusted them to do their jobs โ€“ to find out what happened to our baby. We cannot fathom how this happened.โ€

โ€œIt impacted our lives in a dramatic and horrific way,โ€ she said.

โ€œNow weโ€™re stuck five months after the baby has been delivered, we donโ€™t have answers,โ€ Anthony added. โ€œWhat is the chance if we fall pregnant again, is this going to happen to us again?โ€

The hospital has issued an apology to the parents, and is offering the couple ongoing support. They have since improved their processes so that it wonโ€™t happen again.

โ€œI can only just say that Iโ€™m so sorry that we let them down in this situation,โ€ said Robynne Cooke, general manager of Liverpool Hospital.

However the couple says it โ€˜still wonโ€™t provide answersโ€™. They have now postponed their wedding indefinitely, which was originally set to be in July.
