Legendary singer Aretha Franklin has died, aged 76, from advanced pancreatic cancer, her publicist has confirmed.
The Queen of Soul passed away at her home in Detroit on Thursday morning, surrounded by her family and loved ones.
“Franklin’s official cause of death was due to advanced pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin’s oncologist, Dr Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute” in Detroit,” her family said in a statement.
“In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart,” the statement continued.
“We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds.”
Franklin’s career spanned more than five decades and influenced generations with her incredible voice and powerful message. She won 18 Grammy Awards and was the first female performer to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with numerous hit songs including ‘Respect’, ‘(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman’, ‘Chain of Fools’ and ‘Think’ to name a few.
