On Saturday, July 6th, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor, was christened, exactly two months after he was born. Though the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to keep the royal christening private – including not revealing who Archie’s godparents are, the royal family did share two beautiful photos from the day.
Taking to Instagram on the official @sussexroyal account, Harry and Meghan shared both a group photo from the palace and a sweet black and white portrait of Archie asleep in his mother’s arms, while dad looks on. For the ceremony, the Duchess of Susses chose a beautiful white dress by Dior, which she wore with a matching fascinator and simple diamond stud earrings.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are so happy to share the joy of this day with members of the public who have been incredibly supportive since the birth of their son. They thank you for your kindness in welcoming their first born and celebrating this special moment,” the post read. “Their Royal Highnesses feel fortunate to have enjoyed this day with family and the godparents of Archie.”
While Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip didn’t attend the ceremony due to prior commitments, other members of the royal family were there, including Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Charles, and Duchess Camilla, all of whom are included in the official portrait beside two women who aren’t instantly recognisable, but who are of huge significance to Harry and Meghan: Princess Diana’s sisters, Lady Jane Fellowes, who is standing next to Meghan’s mum Doria Ragland, and Lady Sarah McCorquodale, who is standing next to William.
But that wasn’t the only way Harry’s late mother was honoured on the day. The Duchess of Cambridge wore a beautiful pink Stella McCartney dress, which she paired with red heels and a matching red bespoke Juliette Botterill headband for the occasion. In a subtle tribute to her late mother-in-law, Kate was also wearing Diana’s Collingwood Pearl Earrings – the exact same pair she wore to Harry’s christening in 1984.
Harry and Meghan have shown time and time again that Princess Diana will play a huge part in Archie Harrison’s upbringing. In their Mothers Day post earlier this year, Meghan held Archie in front of forget-me-nots, which were reportedly Diana’s favourite flower and, of course, Harry used diamonds from his mother’s collection for the creation of Meghan’s engagement ring.
Archie’s christening took place at the Queen’s private chapel at Windsor Castle and was attended by around 25 close family members and friends in total, including Archie’s new godparents.
Of course this isn’t the only time we’ll see baby Archie. The newborn is travelling with his parents on a Royal Tour of South Africa this spring.
