UN Women is assembling – Avengers style – a pretty impressive slate of representatives, with Hathaway joining Nicole Kidman and Emma Watson as an ambassador championing womens’ rights.

Hathaway’s role will be to be an advocate for the rights of mothers around the world, particularly in undeveloped nations. It’s a particularly timely role for Hathaway, who became a mother for the first time to a baby boy in April. One of her key roles, according to UN Women’s Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, will be to focus on workplace gender inequality and fighting the onslaught of what she calls the “motherhood penalty”, or the price paid by women in the workforce.

“I feel honoured and inspired by this opportunity to aid in advancing gender equality,” Hathaway said in a press release. “Significant progress has already been made but it is time that we collectively intensify our efforts and ensure that true equality is finally realized.”
