Spanning an impressive two-hours, the season two finale of 1923 was nothing short of dramatic.
The popular prequel to neo-western drama, Yellowstone, the spin-off has seamlessly filled the hole left by the original show.
Now that the second season has wrapped, we unpack everything you need to know about that finale and whether a season three is on the cards.
1923 Season Two Ending, Explained
In the finale episode of 1923, titled “A Dream and a Memory”, we see the Dutton family fight to defend their beloved ranch from Donald Whitfield’s forces. While the family, including Spencer, Cara and Jack Dutton put up an impressive fight, it culminates in the tragic loss of Jack.
Meanwhile, Spencer’s wife has found herself stranded in the Wyoming wilderness when her car runs out of fuel. As she sets the car on fire in an attempt to both stay warm and signal for help, Spencer clocks the smoke while aboard a passing train. Recognising the signal and halting the train, the two reunite in an intensely emotional scene.
The moment is short-lived however, when Alexandra, suffering frostbite, goes into early labour. She manages to give birth to John Dutton II (presumably the grandfather of Yellowstone’s John Dutton III) before succumbing to complications.
Jacob and Cara help to raise their nephew while Spencer takes over the ranch before we close out the season with a flash forward to 1969 where Spencer visits Alex’s grave before peacefully passing away himself.
Will There Be A Season Three Of 1923?
There’s no confirmation yet whether 1923 will return for a third season, however it does look unlikely. The prequel series was originally planned to run for just two seasons with each character’s ending neatly (albeit emotionally) tied up in a nice bow.
Furthermore, the next of the Yellowstone spin-offs, 1944, is said to be in the works and will pick up the Dutton family story. Whether any of the 1923 cast will appear in 1944 remains the be seen, however given Spencer doesn’t pass until 1969, there’s a chance Brandon Sklenar could make a cameo as his older self. We’ll have to wait and see.
